THIS COURSE WILL CONSIST OF SOME CLASSROOM TIME AND SOME HANDS ON TIME.  EACH STUDENT WILL BE FITTED WITH GLOVES AND A COMBINATION HAT/VEIL TO USE IN THE BEE YARD AND THEN TAKE HOME.  WE WILL BE GOING OUT TO THE HIVES AND OPENING UP ONE OR MORE HIVES SHOWING THE STUDENTS THE BEES UP CLOSE.

CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS:

EACH STUDENT MUST WEAR LIGHT COLORED LONG PANTS AND CLOSED TOE AND HEEL SHOES.  NO SANDALS OR FLIP FLOPS!  ALSO EACH STUDENT MUST BRING A LONG SLEEVED WHITE SHIRT (BEST IF A BUTTON SHIRT WITH A COLLAR) TO PUT ON BEFORE GOING OUT TO THE BEE YARD.  THIS IS TO PREVENT GETTING STUNG.  NO NEW CLOTHING AS THE BEES DO NOT LIKE THE SMELL OF NEW DYES.  DON’T WEAR PERFUME OR COLOGNE AS THESE CAN ATTRACT THE BEES WHO THINK THEY SMELL FLOWERS.

NOTE: STUDENTS WHO DO NOT COME WEARING THE APPROPRIATE PANTS AND SHOES AND BRINGING A LONG SLEEVED WHITE SHIRT WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO GO INTO THE BEE YARD.

AS SOON AS EVERYONE IS FITTED WITH THEIR HAT/VEIL AND GLOVES WE WILL GO OVER SOME BEE BIOLOGY AND BEE YARD RULES IN THE CLASSROOM.  THEN SUIT UP AND HEAD OUT TO THE HIVES.

AFTER SEEING THE BEES UP CLOSE WE WILL THEN RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM.  A FRESH FRUIT SNACK WILL BE AVAILABLE SUCH AS WATERMELON, CANTALOUPE, GRAPES, APPLES, BANANAS ALONG WITH BOTTLED WATER.

DURING SNACK THEY WILL WATCH A VIDEO PRODUCED BY THE NATIONAL HONEY BOARD GEARED TO THEIR AGE GROUP ABOUT HONEY BEES AND HONEY.  AFTER THEY WILL ROLL A PAIR OF BEESWAX CANDLES TO TAKE HOME.

THE CLASS WILL BEGIN PROMPTLY AT 8AM AND END AT 12 NOON SO WE WILL NEED EVERYONE TO BE HERE AND READY TO START AT 8AM.  ALSO WE WILL NEED EVERYONE’S PARENTS TO PICK THEM UP AT 12 NOON - NO EXCEPTIONS.

WE WILL TRY TO MAKE THIS INTRODUCTION TO BEEKEEPING A FUN LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND HOPE THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO USE THIS INFORMATION THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES.  THEY ARE OUR FUTURE AND WHETHER THEY DECIDE TO KEEP BEES SOMETIME DURING THEIR LIVES OR NOT THEY WILL LEARN HOW IMPORTANT HONEY BEES ARE TO THE EXISTENCE OF MAN IN ORDER TO PRODUCE ENOUGH FOOD FOR EVERYONE.

Parents may stay but we ask them to sit in the back of the classroom as they are not part of the class.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS.
